There is no statewide general contractor license in Colorado. Licensing is handled city by city and county by county, so a builder who is licensed in Fort Collins is not automatically licensed in Greeley or Windsor. Ask which jurisdictions the builder is currently licensed to pull permits in, and ask them to name the one your lot sits in. A builder who cannot answer that quickly is telling you something. Trades are different: electricians and plumbers are licensed by the state, so ask to see those too.
None of these are unreasonable to ask, and any builder worth hiring will have the answers ready. If a question causes friction, that friction is the answer.
